Yesterday, another $2 million was slashed from our budget here at UNI. That's going to hurt, as we've already cut a good chunk of the "fat" off the University. This is going to result in people losing jobs, no doubt about it. I'm pretty sure my job isn't in any danger, as I provide an "essential" service, but I'm guessing a lot of adjunct faculty and "non-essential" support staff are going to be out of work.

After some minor pain and suffering, and dealing with surly Dish contracters, I finally have HDTV capability. Right now, I only receive four channels, ESPN HD, Discovery HD Theatre, HDNet and HDNet Movies, but boy do they look nice. I'm half-watching the 49ers and the Seahawks right now, and the clarity is amazing. You can almost see each individual blade of grass. My receiver, the 6000u, is capable of displaying my local channels too, as soon as I find an antenna capable of receiving them. I've tried 4 indoor antennas so far, without much luck. It may be time to investigate putting up an aerial antenna, or asking my neighbor if I can drop my distribution amp in his house and run some coax across our yards, as he's already got one.

I think I've gotten the entire site repaired now, if you notice something broken, let me know. I moved my hosting to 1and1.com, because they're offering three years of hosting for free, and I really like their slick little web setup. If you've been thinking about getting a web site, check them out. It's only $5.99/year to register a domain through them, which is quite reasonable.

The idiots in California actually

The idiots in California actually elected Arnold as their next Governor. Wow. The entire state is dumb. I'm saying that not as a comment on Arnold's political ideas, as he's positioned himself as being fiscally conservative and socially liberal (the dude had group sex after all), and I'm fine with that. I'm more concerned about his willingness to submit himself to questioning. He ran an entirely scripted campaign, refused to do any real debates, and the unwashed masses of California elected him! Would you hire someone to work for you if you couldn't ask them any questions in the job interview? I wouldn't.
