Secret AAC Support for Mac TiVo users

The new TiVo Desktop software for Macintosh (version 1.9) will check to see if you have Lame installed (packaged here), and if so, will let you play back your AAC files from iTunes through your TiVo and any TV or stereo system you have connected to it. This isn't documented anywhere, so it looks like someone either snuck it in, or they aren't ready to support it until 2.0, but for those of us who didn't want to re-rip our entire music collections to play them back through our TiVos, it's great news.

Bad Car Day

Last night the automatic window motor on our 2001 Camry started acting up, after a bunch of hassling with it, I at least got the passenger side window rolled back up, so we could drive it until we schedule it to be fixed. Then this morning, while driving it, some cold snow blew back from the top of the hood onto the hot window, and the sudden temperature change cracked the windshield for the entire width of it. Since my deductible is $500, it looks like I'm out around $200-$250 for a new windshield now.

Water Intoxication

A student in California has died as part of a fraternity hazing ritual, but rather than the usual alcohol poisoning, this student died from ingesting too much water. If it was alcohol, you could bet your ass that there'd be some crackdown on booze, but somehow I don't think they're going to start restricting access to the faucets. My point here is that stupid behavior is what kills these people, it has almost nothing to do with what they're ingesting, so let's not blame the alcohol, let's start banning the Greek systems instead. Harsh? Yeah, it is, but seriously, why would you want to join an organization that does this to its members? Have some self-respect.
