Cross-Eyed Mare

Everyday, Al posts some song lyrics on his weblog, which always reminds me of some song I should download on Napster. While I won't blatantly copy him, I will now post some misheard song lyrics, which I dig up over at KissThisGuy.com. Don't check that site out unless you want to start giggling... Misheard Song of the Day: You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette

The real lyrics were: The cross I bear that you gave to me

But I misheard them as: The cross-eyed mare that you gave to me

The embarrassing moment of revelation: I had been singing it in the cafeteria, when the table behind me and my friends started laughing. Now my nickname is Cross-Eyed Mare

I got enough points for a copy of The Sims from the PepsiStuff contest. J Dylan and I swallowed our pride Friday, and went hunting for bottlecaps in trash cans. We didn't find any in three different buildings, then I found the Holy Grail. In Maucker Union, there's a recycle tub for pop cans and bottles. In most buildings, these are locked because Iowa has a 5-cent deposit on cans and bottles. In the union, this tub wasn't locked, so I hoisted the top off it, and dug in the sticky sweet goo up to my elbows. Five minutes later, I emerged with twenty-one yellow bottlecaps, I only needed 17. I washed up and hurried home, and started punching in the codes. 18 of them proved to be valid, a few had already been entered or were for other prizes. I lucked out, but I was ready to grab my cup of change and head for the vending machine if I came up a few caps short. Why the rush? The contest only had a limited number of copies, and they were dropping by about a hundred per day. As of Friday afternoon, there were only 250 copies of the game available, so I had to hurry if I wanted to make sure that I received one. It's a good thing I did, as they're all gone now. I placed my order, and my copy should be in my hands in 10 to 12 weeks...

I picked up a new desk at Target today. I wanted something with a lot of workspace on it, for my scanner, printer, etc. I found a neat one that actually swings out into an L shape, so I can close it up if I have guests staying in my second bedroom. My girlfriend, Holly, did most of the brain-work putting it together, I supplied the brawn, and she didn't even get mad when I kept running off to the living room to watch the Vikings game...

"NewDesk"

And speaking of football, ISU is 4-0 for the first time in 20 years! I don't expect them to emerge victorious from their meeting next weekend with Nebraska, but there's always a chance...

Moving On

It's my last day at CHFA Tech, so I'm taking it easy. My goals for today include:

  • Installing Windows 2000 on a Sony VAIO Notebook

  • Cleaning out my desk
  • Copying all of my documents and MP3's to my new workstation across campus
  • Taking my personal Voodoo 3 card out of my computer here, leaving it with only one video card. The new guy will have to dig up a PCI card on his own if he wants dual-display. ";->"
  • Collecting the other bits of personal hardware and books I've got scattered around, or substitutes therefore (I know that we used my PCMCIA network card in one of these laptops...)
  • Slacking off
  • Collecting 2,200 more Pepsi Points
  • Toting a box with my desk contents to my new office
  • Wiping my workstation clean
  • Destroying my accounts on the servers (What? You need help with that? Oh, I'd help you, but I don't have an account anymore...)
  • Duron

I'm the proud new owner of a Gigabyte GA-7ZX-1 motherboard and an AMD Duron 600. I've replaced the dead A-Bit board (which I loved) and my trusty celeron 366 (overclocked to 458) with this new board, CPU and cooling fan. It ran me $289 after tax, but it's already noticeably faster than my old system. I took the PC133 SDRAM out of my new Dell (which only has a 100mhz memory bus) and put it into the AMD box, which can actually use the 133mhz setting. The box seems stable so far, but all I've done is format the drive and start WindowsMe installation. I'll post my feelings about the AMD chip after I've played with it some more...

    Aeron

I stopped by my new place of employment yesterday to check things out, and found out that I get a nifty new Aeron chair. I've been whining for one of these for about a year in my current position, as the old office chair I'm using rocks not only forwards and backwards, but side-to-side, and is completely un-adjustable. I'm going to have to request a new keyboard though, my new workstation has a Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite on it, and I simply can't stand that keyboard. I like ergonomic keyboards, but that one has a dorky diamond shaped arrangement of the arrow keys and the insert-delete-home-end-page up-page down block is all messed up too. Maybe I should ask for one of the Kinesis keyboards that "John" likes so well.

    Twenty-four, going on seventy-five

Brent Simmons has a short gripe list about MacOS X. From what little I've played with the public beta, his complaints are all valid. The Memory Walk raised $41,000 yesterday, and was a great success. Rain clouds threatened at the start, but fortunately we only received a sprinkling of rain. I'm a little sore this morning, I must be getting old...
